There’s light at the end of the utility bill tunnel, thanks to an easy-to-install skylight that not only brings light to dark spaces, but also helps cut energy costs. That savings is not insignificant, as Americans spend 20 percent of their electricity bills on lighting their home.

Called tubular skylights, they are ideal for situations where there just is not enough light and the homeowner doesn’t want to install a more traditional lighting system, explains a spokesman for ODL, the Michigan company that makes the skylights. They’re perfect for bathrooms, hallways, closets, laundry rooms and just about any room in the house.

Easy To Install

In addition to being Energy-Star qualified, the skylight is also easy for homeowners and contractors to install. A new two-piece installation kit makes installing the skylight simple because the bottom adjustable tube overlaps the top adjustable tube. Just cut a hole in the ceiling and a corresponding one on the roof. Slide in the dome flashing under the roof shingles and attach the reflective tubes. Cap them with the ceiling covering. You may download detailed instructions and watch video clips at http://www.odl.com/sky lights.

The skylight features a patented Solar Lens Dome, which increases light through the tube. During the full midday sun, a 10-inch tubular skylight lights up 150 square feet of space with a solar throughput equal to about three 100-watt bulbs. The 14-inch tubular skylight is designed to light up 300 square feet-an output equal to about five 100-watt bulbs.

ODL also offers a 10-inch and 14-inch Severe Weather Tubular Skylight, for areas where hail or hurricanes are common.

Remember, everyone starts as a beginner at painting. Just because you have never painted a house doesn t mean you shouldn t give it a try. The money you save by painting your own house is money you can put into other home improvements. It can also be a fun thing for the whole family to do.

Now we need to choose the colors we want to paint the house. There is a really cool tool online that you can use. http://www.benjaminmoore.com/wrapper_pcv.asp?L=owner&K=intproj&N=intproj Click let s paint. Choose exterior or the interior options. Choose the project closest to yours. Get started and you will soon know what color you want to paint your house and you ll have a vision of what it is going to look like when you re finished.

Here are some of the basics. Of course the first thing you need to do is wash down the walls of your house. A pressure washer can be rented at almost any rental yard and is the best way to do that. Now go around with a scraper and remove all loose paint and chipped areas. You don t have to scrape the entire wall, but any areas where the surface is not flat can cause you problems as you paint your house.

Next, figure out your square footage so you can determine the amount of paint you will need to buy. Buy your paint in 5-gallon pails, rather than gallons to save more money.

Talk to the helper at your local paint store and tell him about your project. They can help you decide on how many brushes and rollers and other items you will need. You can buy natural or synthetic bristles for oil based paints, but only use synthetic bristles with latex paint. The same rule applies to rollers. Good rollers can run you around $7, but buy high-quality paintbrushes. A good brush for cutting in around edges will run you about $30.

Make sure you purchased some painter s tape. It s blue tape that comes in different widths and is easy to remove without messing up your paint job. That brings us to preparation. Tape off all areas you don t wish to get this color of paint on. If there are large areas to cover, make sure you pick up some rolls of plastic. You can tape the edges of the plastic down over whatever you need to cover.

Don t paint out of the paint cans. First reason is that leaving the paint can open will dry out the paint and make it difficult to apply. Another reason is that your brush or roller picks up dirt and foreign objects, which will end up in your paint and may even change the color as you go along.

Do all of your cutting or trimming in before you paint the walls. Use a 4 brush and with a smooth stroke guide it around the edges where you taped off. Make sure you have plenty of paint on your brush. The biggest mistake people make is trying to stretch the paint too far. Keep drips cleaned up as you go with a small rag. Remember you will be rolling up to the edge of your cut, so don t worry about that, just make sure you cover the edges well.

Start on the edges of your walls and work your way toward the middle. Most people don t do this and problems can result. If you start and new can of paint in the middle of the wall and there is any difference in the color at all, it will show up there more than it would on the edges. So with each new can of paint you open, start at the edges first.

Dip your roller in water (for Latex) or solvent (for oil-based paint), before you start. Whether you use a pan or a 5-gallon bucket with a screen, make sure you roll it out a little to make sure it isn t dripping. You don t need to go all the way from the top to the bottom as you paint. Do what you can reach.

Apply the paint in a Y or an N pattern, then apply paint in columns up and down smoothing out all the edges or ridges as you go. Again don t try to stretch the paint out, make sure you have enough paint on your roller to give it a good coat. If you are applying more than one coat, make sure the first coat is completely dry before applying a new coat of paint.
Corners are a difficult part to learn to paint. If you aren t careful, this is where you will see paint drips later. Get as close to corners as you can, but don t scrape the roller against the corner. That will cause drips. If you are unsure, have a paintbrush handy to smooth out drips. That is also a good idea overall. Keep a paintbrush ready for taking care of any drips or ridges you leave behind. Doing this as you go is much easier than trying to fix it after it s dry or partially dry.

Using tray liners for your paint trays will save you a lot of time at cleanup. Soak your brushes when done for awhile and they will also be easier to clean. For water based paint, soak in water and for oil based paint soak them in solvent.

I hope some of these tips have been helpful to you. Have confidence that you can do this job yourself. You will appreciate and enjoy it much more knowing that you or you and your family completed the job rather than hiring someone else to do it.

In addition to adding style, shutters can also be used as a means of protection for the home or business. In this article, we wanted to provide you with information on the various types of shutters you would find available today. Regardless of your choice, you will find an immediate change of appearance for the better with the shutters adding charm and a hint of sophistication. Remember, shutters can be installed on both the inside and outside of the home. In both cases, the transformation is incredible.

Louver shutters come in a classic 2.5 louver style or if you prefer, you can go with wider louvers up to 3.5 inches. For operation, louver shutters come in a divider rail or split pull bar option. With this, you would be able to operate the shutters from top or bottom. Then, you can add palladium tops such as the radius or sunburst design, which creates privacy while also offering an elegant finish.

For the inside of the home, plantation shutters are a favorite choice. In addition to creating a quaint type of window covering, plantation shutters are great for blocking out sun while adding lots of privacy. Then for the outside of the home, you will often see simple shutters added to each side of the window to help frame and create a beautiful focal point. The exciting thing about shutters is that they come in a wide range of materials such as wood, vinyl, plastic, metal, and steel, along with various colors and styles so regardless of your preference you will find something you like.

Although many people start out with shutters more for aesthetics, shutters are also practical, protecting the interior of a home from the harsh sun’s rays, which can cause carpeting, furniture, and curtains to fade. Shutters also help keep out hot or cold air, protect windows from breakage, and provide protection from debris and water caused by storms. In fact, in addition to standard type shutters, you will also find a nice selection of hurricane shutters specifically made for serious storms.

For instance, automatic roll-down shutters are pre-installed and made from metal or PVC. Designed to roll down on a set of tracks, they can be closed to provide top protection with the flip of a switch. Accordion shutters are also designed for hurricane regions and again, are pre-installed. Used in a box on the side of a window or door, these shutters are simply pulled out and then locked into place. Finally, Bahama shutters are a nice choice although they only provide minimal hurricane protection. However, this type of shutter is great for blocking out the hot sun.

To diagnose noisy plumbing, it is important to determine first whether the unwanted sounds occur on the system’s inlet side-in other words, when water is turned on-or on the drain side. Noises on the inlet side have varied causes: excessive water pressure, worn valve and faucet parts, improperly connected pumps or other appliances, incorrectly placed pipe fasteners, and plumbing runs containing too many tight bends or other restrictions. Noises on the drain side usually stem from poor location or, as with some inlet side noise, a layout containing tight bends.

Hissing

Hissing noise that occurs when a faucet is opened slightly generally signals excessive water pressure. Consult your local water company if you suspect this problem; it will be able to tell you the water pressure in your area and can install a pressurereducing valve on the incoming water supply pipe if necessary.

Thudding

Thudding noise, often accompanied by shuddering pipes, when a faucet or appliance valve is turned off is a condition called water hammer. The noise and vibration are caused by the reverberating wave of pressure in the water, which suddenly has no place to go. Sometimes opening a valve that discharges water quickly into a section of piping containing a restriction, elbow, or tee fitting can produce the same condition.

Water hammer can usually be cured by installing fittings called air chambers or shock absorbers in the plumbing to which the problem valves or faucets are connected. These devices allow the shock wave created by the halted flow of water to dissipate in the air they contain, which (unlike water) is compressible.

Older plumbing systems may have short vertical sections of capped pipe behind walls on faucet runs for the same purpose; these can eventually fill with water, reducing or destroying their effectiveness. The cure is to drain the water system completely by shutting off the main water supply valve and opening all faucets. Then open the main supply valve and close the faucets one at a time, starting with the faucet nearest the valve and ending with the one farthest away.

Chattering or Screeching

Intense chattering or screeching that occurs when a valve or faucet is turned on, and that usually disappears when the fitting is opened fully, signals loose or defective internal parts. The solution is to replace the valve or faucet with a new one.

Pumps and appliances such as washing machines and dishwashers can transfer motor noise to pipes if they are improperly connected. Link such items to plumbing with plastic or rubber hoses-never rigid pipe-to isolate them.

Other Inlet Side Noises

Creaking, squeaking, scratching, snapping, and tapping usually are caused by the expansion or contraction of pipes, generally copper ones supplying hot water. The sounds occur as the pipes slide against loose fasteners or strike nearby house framing. You can often pinpoint the location of the problem if the pipes are exposed; just follow the sound when the pipes are making noise. Most likely you will discover a loose pipe hanger or an area where pipes lie so close to floor joists or other framing pieces that they clatter against them. Attaching foam pipe insulation around the pipes at the point of contact should remedy the problem. Be sure straps and hangers are secure and provide adequate support. Where possible, pipe fasteners should be attached to massive structural elements such as foundation walls instead of to framing; doing so lessens the transmission of vibrations from plumbing to surfaces that can amplify and transfer them. If attaching fasteners to framing is unavoidable, wrap pipes with insulation or other resilient material where they contact fasteners, and sandwich the ends of new fasteners between rubber washers when installing them.

Correcting plumbing runs that suffer from flow-restricting tight or numerous bends is a last resort that should be undertaken only after consulting a skilled plumbing contractor. Unfortunately, this situation is fairly common in older houses that may not have been built with indoor plumbing or that have seen several remodels, especially by amateurs.

Drainpipe Noise

On the drain side of plumbing, the chief goals are to eliminate surfaces that can be struck by falling or rushing water and to insulate pipes to contain unavoidable sounds.

In new construction, bathtubs, shower stalls, toilets, and wallmounted sinks and basins should be set on or against resilient underlayments to reduce the transmission of sound through them. Water-saving toilets and faucets are less noisy than conventional models; install them instead of older types even if codes in your area still permit using older fixtures.

Drainpipes that do not run vertically to the basement or that branch into horizontal pipe runs supported at floor joists or other framing present particularly troublesome noise problems. Such pipes are large enough to radiate considerable vibration; they also carry significant amounts of water, which makes the situation worse. In new construction, specify cast-iron soil pipes (the large pipes that drain toilets) if you can afford them. Their massiveness contains much of the noise made by water passing through them. Also, avoid routing drainpipes in walls shared with bedrooms and rooms where people gather. Walls containing drainpipes should be soundproofed as was described earlier, using double panels of sound-insulating fiberboard and wallboard. Pipes themselves can be wrapped with special fiberglass insulation made for the purpose; such pipes have an impervious vinyl skin (sometimes containing lead). Results are not always satisfactory.

Ceiling fans have been available for more than a century and with energy costs rising, are more popular today than ever before. For pennies a day, while air conditioning is a wonderful luxury in hot climates, it is also expensive and can even turn interiors a bit too chilly unless carefully balanced.

During the winter months, ceiling fans set to the reverse setting recalculate warm air that rises to the ceiling, providing an even, comfortable temperature by moving the warmer air down from the ceiling hot air rises and back into your living space.

Ceiling fans are a terrific way to keep cool in the rooms you use most. Plus, they’ll help save energy and lower your cooling costs. You may have noticed ceiling fans in popular restaurants, beachfront hotels, and tropical retreats, but may not have considered installing them in your own home.

Ceiling fans are available today in a wide variety of sizes, styles, and finishes. And whether you have a slanted ceiling, a high or a low ceiling, or even want to install a fan in an outside patio, there are products and accessories made just for these special situations.

Each of these will have an effect on what the fan will look like. Moreover, the blades may be made out of a different material than the center of the ceiling fan itself Often the blades can be made out of different material based on the consumer’s choice and requirements.

You should also know what size fan you are looking for as many fans have blades that are different sizes than others. This is important for how the fan fits into the room. Ceiling fans circulate the air in a room, creating a wind chill effect. As a result, the air conditioning thermostat can be set to a higher temperature, saving energy.

Carpet and rug weaving in Iran (Persia) dates back to 3500 years in the bronze age, according to some experts. The oldest evidences of this art date back to the third to fifth centuries AD discovered in Eastern Turkestan, and hand-weavings of the Seljuks of Asia Minor. Carpets from Safavid dynasty (1501-1736) in the 16th century are also some of the earliest products in the history of carpet-weaving.

Although weaving of Persian rugs is predominantly mechanized now, the most popular and expensive ones are still hand woven in many parts of Iran, such as Baluch Rugs, Shiraz Rugs, and Wiss Rugs etc still reflecting the rich art and culture of ancient Persia. The Carpet Museum of Iran in Tehran houses some of the best works in the history of Persian rug weaving.

The motifs in Persian rugs commonly consist of scrolling vine networks, arabesques, palmettes, cloud bands, medallions, and overlapping geometric compartments, with silk, wool and cotton as foundations. The designs are mostly intricate bearing little resemblance to one another but unique to the specific type. However, there are some universal styles of weaving, pattern and design commonly used.

Single and double tied rugs differentiate Anatolian or Turkish and Persian rugs. Anatolian carpets are double tied which means that for every vertical strand of thread in the rug, it has two knots. The Persian rug is single tied so it has only one knot. This allows finer image to appear on the final product because only the minimum amount of space is given for each vertical strand. This method has largely contributed to the Persian rug s exquisiteness and popularity.

Persian city rugs such as Isfahan, Nain, Qum, Tabriz, Mashad, Kerman, Kashan etc are made with intricate designs of buds and blossoms supported by vines and tendril, and bordered by arabesques that interlace creating a well-balanced tone. Solid color filed central medallions and triangular corners are also commonly used in design. Central motif or medallion may also be replaced by an all-over design of repetitive floral icons. Blues, reds, browns, and greens are also predominant to create a lavish whole. Ground colors of border and field generally contrast without disrupting the harmony. The curvilinear pattern is achieved by increasing the intensity of knots, usually a 200-300 KPSI (knots per square inch), creating a visually curved line.

Persian Tribal rugs are usually made with natural raw materials such as dye, and mostly hand-woven. They generally have 80-100 KPSI, and designs are mostly geometric which are easier to achieve with wider spaced knots. Traditional dense floral patterns with vases, foliage, palmettes, and garden elements, small animals or plants etc are commonly used in design. These rugs are woven by the tribes in Iranian villages such as Wiss, near Hamedan; Shiraz, Central Iran; Baluch tribe in southern Iran etc. There are also tribal weavers of Caucasian and Turkoman origins. Some of the Persian tribal rugs are quite exception with weaving method following ancient Persian tradition, dating back to thousands of years.

Deciding what to buy: Cost, Quantity, and Location

It s time again to spruce up the outdoors. When purchasing patio furniture there are several important factors to consider that will determine the type and the cost of patio furniture you choose.

First, it is important to consider the cost. There are so many options to choose from, ranging from very cost effective, to very high end furniture. An important option to consider is buying bulk. If you have a large outdoor patio, buying in bulk will ensure across the board coordination of your patio set. You will always have extra seating for entertaining, without having to pull out the old mismatch patio chairs that get packed away in a shed.

Second, determine the size of the area you plan to furnish. Are you just looking for a small patio set, or do you want to furnish all 3 decks and the pool side area? Ordering in bulk, you can have a variety of furniture that coordinates throughout your outdoor patio. Do you frequently entertain outdoors? If so, a large variety of outdoor patio furniture will ensure that your guests will be comfortable, and notice your beautiful outdoor space.

Lastly, consider your location. Some types of furniture, such as resin patio furniture, hold up better in sunny and windy conditions, such as the beach. Other types of furniture are more resilient to winterizing, such as melamine furniture, and if you live in colder climates, this will be important when the patio furniture gets put up for the season.

So, whatever your budget, size, or location, visit PatioStuff for some great ideas and styles in patio furniture.

One dilemma that many a person now faces in the 21st century is what to do when a home appliance breaks down or goes on the fritz. Of course, for many people the initial inclination is to phone up a repair person and have the machine fixed. On the other hand, many people in this day and age are quick to merely go out and have the busted appliance replaced with a new unit.

In point of fact, there are some factors that you do need to take into consideration when attempting to decide whether to repair or to replace a home appliance that is not working correctly. Perhaps the most important factor to take into consideration — about everything else that might come to mind — is price.

Many basic home appliances are now priced in such a manner that is you have owned and utilized the equipment for an extended period of time it makes more economic sense merely to go out and make the purchase or a replacement product. For example, many elementary clothes washer and dryer units are now priced in many countries around the world at fairly reasonable rates. In other words, the cost of repairing a failing used appliance may be such that you actually save money in the greater scheme of things by making the purchase of a new unit.

On the other hand, many people at this point in time actually are making very significant investments in their home appliances. For examples, there are some people in some parts of the world that are paying tens of thousands of dollars or other equivalent monetary units to equip their kitchens with the latest home appliances. In point of fact, many people are spending on a refrigerator what it costs to purchase an automobile.

If you are such a person who is forking over a significant amount of cash to purchase home appliances for your residence, you naturally will want to give serious consideration to having the item repaired. In these instances it is not simply a matter of spending a few hundred dollars (or the equivalent) to replace a home appliance on the blink.

Finally, some people actually do become attached to a particular home appliance — particularly those associated with the kitchen. If that is the case, and if repair costs are not outlandish, it does make sense to have the item on the blink repaired rather than replaced.
